シェイクスピアが題材のアカデミックなMMOが開発中止、「楽しさが欠けていた」と作り手 |

 17世紀はじめの英国で活躍し、「ロミオとジュリエット」「ハムレット」など、数多くの有名な戯曲を残したウィリアム・シェイクスピア。米インディアナ大学では、彼を題材にしたMMOタイトル『Arden: The World of William Shakespeare』の開発が進められていたが、その開発が中止になったことが、技術系ニュースサイト“Technology Review”で報じられた。
本作は、Bioware社のファンタジーRPG『Neverwinter Nights』で、常設サーバを用いるマルチプレイ専用シナリオとして開発されていた。その目的は、プレイヤーにシェイクスピアの世界を身近に感じてもらうと同時に、仮想世界における経済を研究すること。ゲーム内では、シェイクスピアの生み出した登場人物と交流できるほか、トリビアクイズに挑戦する/他のプレイヤーとカードゲームをする、といったことができる。
開発を手がけていたのは、同大学の准教授であるEdward Castronova氏。2001年に仮想世界の経済に関する論文を発表して、話題になった人物だ。今回の開発中止について同氏は、「（本作には）楽しさが欠けていたため」と説明。「教育と研究を結び付けようと意気込みすぎた。この経験は他の研究者への注意として生かすべきだろう」と語っている。また、教育や医療にとりくむMacArthur財団から出資された25万ドル（US）も、MMOの開発予算としては十分でなかったようだ。
残念な結果となってしまったが、Castronova氏は、ゲームの開発と仮想世界の研究はこれからも続けていくとのこと。また、本作はお蔵入りになるわけではなく、上記リンクの公式サイトで公開されており、無料でダウンロードすることができる。
